Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
